Introduction
Out of all my foreign trips, my visit to Republic of China, or ROC Taiwan, was by far the most challenging experience. This five-day tour has the least amount of preparation.
My itinerary to Taiwan has undergone numerous changes as a consequence of a three-week planning period. In an attempt visit all four cities in five days, a series of hotel cancellations have been made. In addition, a number of attractions have been skipped.
An unpleasant weather greeted us as we landed at the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. I was unable to leave Taoyuan City on time for Taichung, the first stop of my five-day vacation through Taiwan. I then had to wait for about half an hour for the next train departure, which caused delays on my trip.
When I arrived in Taichung, a torrential downpour engulfed the city, but I nevertheless went forward. Despite the pouring rain, I was still able to see some of Taichung’s most well-known tourist spots and fully experience the depth of the city’s artistic and cultural richness.

Visa in Taiwan

Philippine passport holders traveling for tourism in Taiwan are visa-exempt until July 31, 2025, for a maximum of 14 days.

Standard Time in Taichung
The Coordinated Universal Time, or UTC, in Taichung is UTC +08:00.
Hence, Taichung is four hours ahead of Dubai, six hours ahead of Paris, and seven hours ahead of London. Moreover, Taichung is twelve hours ahead of New York. Conversely, Taichung is an hour behind Tokyo and three hours behind Sydney. The Taiwanese city shares the same time with Manila.
Climate in Taichung
With the exception of the southern region, Taichung and the rest of Taiwan have hot, humid, and wet summers and cool, and dry winters, which are common characteristics of subtropical climate.
Best Time to Visit Taichung
Taichung is a year-round island destination. But the city is ideal to visit when the weather is bearable to entirely experience its array of out-of-door attractions.
March to May
The springtime in Taichung lasts from February to May. Its pleasant weather and more colorful landscapes make it one of the best seasons to visit the city.
June to August
Torrential downpours, sweltering summer heat, and typhoons are likely to be encountered when visiting Taichung from June to August, which extends through September. Thus, the summer season is less preferred for outdoor activities in the city.
However, the cultural and arts center of Taiwan has several indoor museums in addition to its numerous shopping centers, in case caught in severe rains.
September to November
The fall foliage season is another ideal time of the year to visit Taichung. Visitors may experience milder temperatures and a slight chance of rainfall, especially September and October. Besides the comfortable weather, the city’s autumn leaf offers stunning urban views.
December to February
A wintry atmosphere welcomes tourists as they tour throughout Taichung from December until February. Hence, if the uncomfortable winter spell is unbearable, take a plunge in Taichung’s well-liked hot spring, Guguan.
Also, expect throngs of people between January 21st and February 20th as Taiwan celebrates the Lunar New Year and Lantern Festival. Thus, hotel rates soar during the most celebrated holiday in Taiwan.
Language in Taichung
Mandarin Chinese is the official and widely spoken language in Taichung and the rest of Taiwan. In addition to the officially recognized language, Taiwanese Hokkien, or Taiwanese, is also a familiar language in the city.
English, on the other hand, is seldom used in conversations. Public signs throughout the city, however, have English translations.

Currency in Taichung
New Taiwan dollar, abbreviated as NTD, or TWD, is the official currency of Taiwan. As of May 31, 2024, the exchange rate is NTD 1, PHP 1.80, or USD 0.031.
The foreign exchange servicing in Taiwan is subject to tighter government regulations. Only authorized banks, like Bank of Taiwan and CTBC Bank, facilitate issuance of local currency. In addition, establishments, such as FOREX kiosks at airports, department stores, shopping malls, and major hotels are approved to render service. Thus, no independent money changers are found across Taiwan.
For cash withdrawals, ATMs, or automated teller machines, are widely spaced and available around the clock. But inform your home bank in advance regarding ATM use abroad.
Taichung Travel Guide Tip: It is prohibited for any passenger entering and departing Taiwan to carry more than NTD 100,000 or USD 10,000. Therefore, the undeclared excess amount is subject to confiscation.
Modes of Payment in Taichung
Besides cash, plastic cards and transit passes are accepted modes of payment in Taichung. Additionally, locals and tourists adopt a variety of online payment apps.
Cash
Hard cash is the widely used and the most common method of payment in Taichung. Small-scale establishments prefer bills, so it is important to bring sufficient cash, especially for retail transactions.
Bank Cards
Plastic cards in the forms of debit, credit, and prepaid cards are cash alternatives honored in many upmarket facilities, such as hotels and shopping centers.
Transit Pass
The EasyCard, iPass, and iCash 2.0 card are handy cash substitute to paying fares for public transportation in Taichung. They are used for Taiwan railways, Taichung Metro, public buses, and bicycle rentals. Moreover, these electronic cards serve some other purposes, like retail purchases.
The physical card, without load, costs NTD 100, PHP 180.40, or USD 3.08 and is non-refundable. It is available for purchase at airports, train stations, online channels, and convenience stores. While top ups are made at rail stations’ service booths and card vending machines, and convenience shops.
Electronic Wallets
Online payment apps, including Apple Pay and Google Pay, are useful and seamless methods to make purchases at numerous facilities in Taichung. Digital payment apps are honored in most upscale shops and department stores.
Ways of Getting to Taichung
Taiwan is made up of the main island and the remaining ninety land masses that comprise the Penghu Archipelago.
Wide-open waterways encircle the roughly 36,000-square-kilometer island. The East China Sea and the Pacific Ocean surround Taiwan to the north, northeast, and east, respectively. Moreover, the Bashi Channel is bound to the south and the Taiwan Strait to the west.
Taichung Travel Guide Reminder: It is restricted for travelers to bring any meat products, including fresh produce, into Taiwan. A fine of NTD 200,000 will be imposed on first-time offenders or face repatriation.
By Air
Although sea-crossing is viable from mainland China, traveling via air is a faster and more convenient option to reach Taiwan. Aside from Taiwan’s main gateway, several other airhubs in major cities serve international flights.
Taichung International Airport, Taiwan’s fourth busiest airhub, is the closest to Taichung. It caters to travelers from Asian cities, including Hong Kong. Downtown Taichung is around 45 minutes travel from the airport via bus or cab.

Taoyuan to Taichung
The Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport in Taoyuan, which is around 150 kilometers from downtown Taichung, is Taiwan’s primary entry point. There are no direct trains that connect between the busiest airport in Taiwan and the largest city in Central Taiwan.
However, on-ground transportation, like buses and taxis, runs between Taoyuan International Airport and Taichung roughly in two hours.
Taipei to Taichung
Taipei’s Songshan Airport is approximately 165 kilometers, or approximately a three-hour trip to Taichung. Several land transportation, such as regular railways, buses, and taxis, serve the Taipei-Taichung route.
Although pricier than the Taiwan Railway, the Taiwan High-Speed Rail, or simply THSR is a quicker method to reach Taichung. From Taipei Main Station, travel time requires less than an hour.
Kaohsiung to Taichung
Located southward of Taichung, the Kaohsiung International Airport is Kaohsiung’s main entry point, serving the greater Kaohsiung areas. Numerous international flights from various destinations in Asia, including China, Japan, and South Korea, arrive and depart at the Kaohsiung International Airport.
From Kaohsiung, Taichung is well-connected by railways and other ground transportation.
By Water
The Taiwan Strait divides the west coast of Taiwan from the southeast of mainland China. Ferry service is operational, but with reduced schedules.
From mainland China, catch a ferry boat at the ports of Xiamen and Pingtan Island in Fuzhou to reach Taichung.
Getting Around Taichung
Taichung is the third-largest city in Taiwan in terms of land area, which spans roughly 2,215 square kilometers. Getting around the vast city by metro rapid transit is not as convenient as there is only one line currently in service.
However, buses serve a number of routes, in addition to their plentiful cabs, traveling across the city.
Taichung Travel Guide Reminder: Public transports are often crammed during rush hours. The most busiest time of the day in Taichung is between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., and 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. during weekdays.
Train
The urban rail transit in Taichung doesn’t reach all spots of interest in the city. However, taking the Taichung Metro is probably the quickest route to reach one of Taiwan’s largest night markets, Fengchia Night Market.
Metro Rapid Transit
The Taichung Mass Rail Transit, or Taichung Metro, started operation in 2021 with its initial route, Green Line. It runs between Beitun Main Station and Xinwuri Station, connecting Taiwan High-Speed Rail Taichung Station.
Taichung Metro’s operating hours are 6:00 a.m. until 12:00 a.m. The minimum fare for a single journey is NTD 20.00, PHP 36.08, or USD 0.62.
Taiwan Railway also serve commuters to several locations in Taichung, including Tai’an, the nearest rail station in Zhongshe Flower Market.
Bus
Buses in Taichung serve as an alternative transport form to MRT’s constrained train route and taxis’ pricier rates. Tourist buses, on the other hand, provide a more leisurely way for visitors to see Taichung’s wealth of attractions while touring the city core.
Regular Bus
Taichung City Buses are dependable and cheap transportation method in Taichung. These on-ground transports follow a multitude of routes, even in Taichung’s far reaches, like Rainbow Village.
The minimum fare is NTD 20, PHP 36.08, or USD 0.62 if paid through cash. However, get a discounted fare of NTD 15, PHP 27.06, or USD 0.46 if using a transit pass. Some bus lines in Taichung operates around the clock.
Taichung Travel Guide Tip: How do I get on and get off the city bus in Taichung? Almost all buses in Taichung have two doors and designated bus stops. Enter through any of the two doors, then pay the exact amount of cash on the box or hover your IC card over the card reader.
As you approach your destination, press the stop button. Then, tap again your IC card over the card reader before getting off either of the bus doors.
Tourist Shuttle
The Taichung Midtown Bus Loop is a tourist shuttle service that follows a circular route in Taichung’s inner city. It leads to the city’s best tourist attractions, including temples, museums, parks, and shopping centers.
Tourist shuttles depart from 6:00 a.m. through 10:00 p.m. at Taichung Station, Chenggong and Minzu Intersection. In addition, the fare for the circuit journey is NTD 34, PHP 61.34, or USD 1.05 and NTD 29, PHP 52.32, or USD 0.89 for IC card users.
Taxi
In Taichung, conventional taxis are recognized through their distinctive yellow exteriors. Cabs in the city are positioned close to ports, train stations, tourist spots, and shopping centers.
A metered taxi in Taichung charges NTD 85, PHP 153.35, or USD 2.62 for the initial 1.5 kilometers and NTD 5, PHP 9.02, or USD 0.15 for every succeeding 300 meters. In addition, cabs charge an extra for late-night trips and holidays.
Taichung Travel Guide Tip: Almost all taxi drivers in Taichung do not speak English. Hence, it is necessary to print the address of destination for easy navigation.
Bicycle
Cycling is a pleasurable method to get around Taichung. Introduced in 2019, Youbike, or Ubike, is a public bicycle-sharing scheme. The Youbike 2.0 is available for rental from over a thousand bike stations across Taichung. These electric bicycles, distinguished by their white and yellow colors, are docked at roadsides near the rail stations, tourist spots, etc.
The minimum rental fee is NTD 20, PHP 36.08, or USD 0.62, which is good for a 30-minute ride. To utilize it, download the Youbike 2.0 app with your Taiwan SIM card and register your IC card or credit card.
Taichung Travel Guide Fact: The Giant Manufacturing Co. Ltd., or simply Giant, is the world’s largest bicycle designer and manufacturer. This Taiwanese company is headquartered in Dajia, Taichung, Taiwan.
Areas to Stay in Taichung
Most tourist attractions are spread out across Taichung. As such, while going to these spots of interest, visitors are likely to spend a considerable amount of time in transit. To fully appreciate Taiwan’s cultural and arts hub, it is recommended to remain for at least a day in the city.
Central District
The Central District is the smallest neighborhood in Taichung. It hosts a plethora of shops, restaurants, and lodging facilities close to the main rail station.
Central District offers ease of access to many areas of Taiwan, as it is home to the Taichung Train Station. Miyahara, a favorite confectionary shop in Taichung, is conveniently located in Central District.
North District
Visitors can expect a more restful setting in the North District. This neighborhood has a few verdant public spaces, including the Botanical Garden and the four-hectare oldest urban park in Taichung, Taichung Park. Besides its wide public parks and gardens, North District is also brimming with streets of shops and eateries.
East District
The East District is a perfect neighborhood for lifestyle shopping and entertainment. It is home to some of the city’s largest retail complexes, like Mitsui Shopping Park LaLaport, Taroko Mall, and a few factory outlets.
West District
West District is an ideal location for those who appreciate forms of artistic creation. Along with a number of intriguing galleries, it is home to the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. In addition, the West District holds a collection of out-of-doors art installations and murals.
Xitun
Lies on the westward of Taichung, Xitun, or ‘western village,’ is a popular neighborhood in the city. The vibrant area is home to one of the largest night markets in Taiwan, Fengchia Night Market. Surrounding the well-known market are an abundance of lodging options, ranging from inexpensive hostels to pricier hotels.
Internet in Taichung
With iTaiwan and iTaichung WI-FI service, users can enjoy free access to the internet inside the government premises, major rail stations, and tourist spots. Some convenience shops also provide free internet connection in addition to airport and hotels complimentary WI-FI.

Taichung operates on a 110 V supply voltage with a frequency of 60 Hz and uses two types of power adaptors:

Rainbow Village
Situated west of downtown Taichung in Nantou District, Rainbow Village is among the best-known and coolest attractions in Taichung. The animated and vibrantly painted houses draw a million visitors each year.
A former armed personnel named Huang Yong-Fu, or known as ‘Rainbow Grandpa,’ painted the entire settlement out of boredom and fear of demolishing the property where his house is erected. A petition made led to Rainbow Village recognition as a cultural site.
Admission to Rainbow Village is free, and it is open any time from Tuesday to Sunday.

Zhongshe Flower Market
Chung she Flower Market, or Zhongshe Flower Market, is a 6-hectare flower farm located in Houli District. The expansive garden provides gorgeous views of carefully arranged and well-manicured blooms.
This well-known photography-worthy spot in Taichung boasts diverse ornamental plants with eye-catching props, such as pianos, statuettes, and Dutch windmills. Additionally, inside the farm are gift shops, kiddie rides, and a barbeque cafeteria.
Zhongshe Flower Market admits visitors from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., daily, except during the Lunar New Year. The entry fee is NTD 120, PHP 216.52.00, or USD 3.70 from April to December, and NTD 150.00, PHP 270.65, or USD 4.62 during peak season. Moreover, discounts are also extended to children, the elderly, and those with impairments.

Chun Shui Tang
Founded in 1983, Chun Shui Tang, formerly Yangshien Tea Shop, is a teahouse chain that originated in No. 30 Siwei Street in Taichung. The teashop claimed to have invented bubble milk tea, Taiwan’s favorite beverage.
Aside from their signature milk tea, Chun Shui Tang serves other delectable dishes from their numerous branches in Taiwan, Japan, and Hong Kong. Though the hours of operation may differ for each branch, Chun Shui Tang Original Store is open from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m., daily.
A must-eat in Taichung: Boba milk tea, or bubble tea, is a well-liked Taiwanese drink. The cold beverage is typically made of black tea, milk, and black tapioca pearls.

Miyahara
A stone’s throw from Taichung Train Station, Miyahara is a well-known confectionery shop positioned along Zhongshan Road in Taichung. This historic building is a former eye clinic, transformed into Taichung’s health bureau, then repurposed into a dessert and ice cream parlor.
The building exteriors combine both the old and contemporary architectural forms with high-ceiling vintage interiors that create a homey ambiance. However, its main draw is its choice of high-grade confections, which never fails to pull in palate-pleasing patrons. Miyahara opens daily from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
