It has been my long-held desire to visit the “Land of the Rising Sun.” But each time this idea comes across my mind, I am always in doubt, knowing that it will make it difficult for me to realize my dream of visiting Japan with my third-world passport.
In an attempt to travel overseas, I journey to Southeast Asia, which allows me to immerse myself in its rich culture without the need for a visa. After three straight years of traveling throughout parts of the region, I eventually decided to visit Japan and get over my fears of being denied admission.
On October 11, 2022, immediately after the announcement of Japan opening its borders for international travel, I applied for a Japan visa. Before the release of the result, I was a little nervous and feeling anxious, knowing that there are awful stories about applicants getting denied entry.
The visa results are in after several days of waiting. I was saddened to learn that the applicant ahead of me had his visa rejected without further explaining the reasons for visa denial. On the contrary, I can’t contain the sheer joy of the approval of my Japan visa.
In the fall of 2022, I flew to Japan filled with excitement and anticipation. The long-held dream came to reality as I set foot in Osaka for the very first time, which makes this trip one of my most prized overseas moments.

A “visa denial” occurs when an immigration officer or consular official declines to issue a visa to an applicant who fails to fulfill their entry requirements. It might happen due to unsatisfactory documentation and several other common reasons for visa denial listed below.

The visa application form is a fundamental requirement when applying for a visa, which contains the applicant’s personal and travel details. As such, immigration authorities are very keen on the information you provide, as it serves as a reliable reference to determine the eligibility of the candidate.
Inaccuracy, insufficiency, and inconsistency of information, such as typographical errors or empty fields, may likely contribute to the non-issuance of a visa. Thus, the applicant must pay close attention to each mandatory field and ensure that the details entered on the form correspond with the accompanying records.

If traveling abroad, establish a credibility and act in accordance with the immigration laws to avoid future complications and potential refusals of visa applications.

A well-established and consistent account of past travels demonstrates that the visa applicant is in good faith and has an evident intention of returning to his homeland. Thus, it establishes a solid reputation as a seasoned traveler.
Travelers, primarily inexperienced travelers, are urged to initially visit non-visa-required countries and territories, such as Singapore and Hong Kong, to strengthen applications for future visa approvals. However, you must still adhere to the immigration procedures enforced at the airport.
Unstable Source of Income
Unsteady sources of income are among the critical reasons for visa denial. Immigration authorities may likely cast doubts about the applicant’s honest intention if found to have unstable revenue streams, whether out of work or having precarious employment and livelihood.
To refrain from being suspected of seeking employment abroad, establish a long-term occupation or means of subsistence. As an alternative, request a sponsorship from an individual or organization who is capable of funding the trip, whether a benefactor with strong financial standing or an institutional backer.
Insufficient Funds
Travel necessitates having adequate funds to cover all associated costs, which include transportation, lodging, tours, meals, and so forth. If an applicant wants to visit a country requiring a pre-travel authorization, he must have sufficient savings to pay any potential vacation expenses.
For instance, if you’re planning a seven-day vacation to Incheon and several other cities in South Korea, be certain that the allocated budget will cover the entire trip for all of the participants. While immigration officials do not vouchsafe a minimum bank balance, a deliberately hefty bank deposit could raise suspicion, which may potentially lead to the visa refusal.
Instead, save money gradually and steadily and strengthen revenue streams if planning a trip for the upcoming years. Keep in mind that the allocated funds ought to match the cost of living at the destination.
Weak Ties
Immigration authorities are likely to decline a visa application if it emerges that there are weak ties to the country of origin, like a lack of firmly entrenched commitments and poor professional and financial ties.
In the absence of significant connections in a home country, relevant authorities assume that the applicant may settle permanently in the country of destination. Thus, establish a strong social and economic foundation, like legitimate proof of familial and community ties, evidence of residency, and records of economic mainstay.
Final Thoughts
Immigration officials have outlined factors to take into account when applying for a visa. However, the approval or denial of the visa application may entirely depend on the applicants’ clear intent and the readiness to travel through their documentation.
In the end, the decision of whether the visa applicant is eligible for a stamp of approval still rests with the immigration authorities.
