Introduction
A visit to Shifen to marvel at the colorful sky lanterns would be a must-do activity on any trip to New Taipei City. This is among the three main reasons why, in spite of the inclement weather, I spent an entire day in the city.
It was raining when I arrived in Yehliu Geopark in New Taipei, my first stop in the northernmost city of Taiwan. This natural landscape is often renowned for its unique features. As much as I wanted to stay a little longer, I had to cut short my visit due to incessant rains.
I then made my way to Jiufen Old Street, which took me around two hours to reach the upland marketplace. It is well-known for shopping and dining, with rustic gift shops, and tea houses lining up along the winding and steep alleyways.
Though the afternoon weather remains entirely unbearable, I immediately left for Shifen. Shifen Old Street is the precise location where sky-lit lanterns, which reveal someone’s intentions, are thrown into the air. It would be a shame not to partake in this Taiwanese custom penning my wish, ‘Success for Traveledictorian.’
